The John Lucas Future of the Game camps are designed for high level 5/6th graders. This is a feeder camp to gaining respect and earning an invite to the International Middle School Combine when a player is of age (8th and select 7th).
Coach John Lucas is on the McDonald’s All American selection committee and hand picks the players for the NBPA Top 100 camp every year for the top high school players nationally. Every year there are a hand full of the top college players leaving for the NBA draft who come to Houston to train with Coach Lucas in preparation for their workouts with NBA teams. USA Basketball uses the camps in identifying the pool of talent for their Developmental Teams. Four players from the Gold Medal winning 17U team have come through our programs, and 27 players from our programs we invited to the USA 16U trials this past fall in Colorado Springs.
John Lucas is looking for the best of the best. At this age it is still too early to tell what players will grow, get better, not get caught up in themselves and max out as players down the line. What Lucas does with these camps is give them a better base of high level basketball so that they can play on the court with anyone at any time.
In their gym in Houston is is not uncommon to see a 7th or 8th grader on the court with 10 year NBA players in a live game. They are permitted to do so because they have grasped the understanding of where to be, what pass to make, what shots to take after they have been under Lucas’ guidance long enough. As many of you know the John Lucas Camps usually do draw the top talent nationally and these camps do sell out every session.
Do not waste time enrolling your child if they are hungry to improve and compete with the best. If you know of a player please pass this along to their parent or coach. If you’re interested please email Brian Merritt at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
